Credit Card Fraud:

Tips On How To Avoid It

Credit cards provide many conveniences, but they also carry some risks. You can minimize these risks by being smart, and by staying alert to some of the common scams in the marketplace. Here's a list of things to look out for:

  1. Make sure your card is returned to you after every transaction.
  2. If you shop by phone, make sure the person or company you're dealing with is legitimate. If you have questions or concerns, get answers before giving your credit card number to anyone.
  3. Pay attention to your credit card slip as it's being filled out. Make sure it's not passed through the machine more than once. Ask for your carbons.
  4. Destroy the carbons, but keep your credit card receipts and check them against your monthly bills.
  5. Destroy every credit card that's out of date. Cut it in half and dispose of it so the number can't be used by someone else.
  6. Make a list of your major credit cards, their account numbers and the phone numbers to call if cards are lost. Leave this list in a safe place at home. Don't carry it with you where it could be lost or stolen.
  7. If your card is stolen or you can't find it for any reason, call your credit card company immediately. Your liability is usually limited if you notify the issuer within 24-48 hours.
